In a December 2019 National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) election, the employees of All-Star Transportation (Bus Drivers) contracted to provide services in the Newtown Board of Education, overwhelmingly voted in favor of having UPSEU Local 1222 become their collective bargaining representative. This was the groups 2nd attempt in which this group of employees had an election to go union. The second time is a charm as they finally prevailed. When asked by Nephty Cruz, Labor Relations Representative for UPSEU, “Why did the vote fail the first time, and why UPSEU?” Phyllis Page, Unit Chief Shop Steward, stated, “the Teamsters failed the first time, and we went with UPSEU because we appreciated the presentation made by Nephty Cruz and Matt Geer to the unit and that we could get far better representation for much less than the Teamsters dues.” Mrs. Page sat in as UPSEU’s Observer during the count. She was extremely nervous. When the count was over she was so excited and stated, “I prayed and God answered. I wouldn’t know how to face the employees had we lost, but glad I never had to find out.” UPSEU Local 1222 is currently in negotiations with All-Star Transportation. |
